what’s up guys!, just joined R2R still new to the hobby, have had my 25 lagoon up and running for 3 months now, everything has been good, but I have this pretty bad Dino problem, and I checked my phosphate and nitrate, both zero… could this be a cause to the outbreak? Also is it to early to start dosing, I have a few corals in there, biggest one being a frog spawn, nothing crazy, I’ll post a picture below, don’t judge me lol this is my first reef tank! Any recommendations on what my next steps should be are appreciated!

I’ve just dealt with Dino’s in one of my tanks it took a year battle. Tried multiple things what worked was out competing it with using diatoms and dosing microbactor 7.

Thanks for the feedback! Could you possibly elaborate on “using diatoms” are you saying, create a diatom bloom to compete against the Dino’s?

Yes, you probably won’t even see diatoms. Raising silicates will get the job done with microbactor 7 should get rid of Dino’s, if that doesn’t work then a strong UV is your best option.

And what do you have for flow in the tank? Increasing flow may help here too.

I have decent flow but the wave maker is only on one side

That's good! A lot of tanks I see have only one wavemaker on one side.

But my point was that increasing your flow, or even redirecting your flow at the areas with the dinos may help. Blow them right off your sand bed lol!

Thanks I’ll give it a shot! I’ve also have been reading that if both nitrate and phosphate are zero it could lead to an outbreak? Is that true? If so should I even try to dose them?

That's a little over my head to try to answer that question myself. I'm not sure if there's a connection there, but I'd be thrilled if someone could let us both know for sure!

But what I will say is that maintaining 0 nitrate and 0 phosphate was a methodology that we aimed for many years back. We've since learned that this is not what's best, the algae living symbiotically with coral need some nitrate and phosphate to be healthy. So if your system is running at 0 nitrate and 0 phosphate, I would suggest you get those numbers up a bit. Your corals will appreciate it, and if it does help with the dinos, so much the better.
