You might be thinking "There goes an other dino thread!".

But truth be told, there is so much content on algea and more specifically dino/diatoms that my brain is all scrambled as i read one think and its opposite.

There seems to be no concensus when it comes to dinos specifically as far as i've read (quiet a lot so far).
No nutrient causes them, no actually its high nutrient, but actually its the lights - you should turn the lights off, well actually the lights dont matter much sometimes, you gotta traeat the tank, no you need to let it run its course, if you do nothing its going to crash your tank and be there forever ...

You get the idea lol ...

SOOOOOOO ... here I am seeking the most sound advice towards the most experienced reefers here.

#1
I need to confirm that im dealing with dino first.
If so, is there a specific kind? Do i need to get a microscope or would that just be a waste of money, im broke af right now ..

#2
I need guidance on exactly what to do.

Here is my tank/stock and parameters:
DT 55g
Sump: 29g filled halfway with socks, skimmer, empty fuge, and return sections
Flow: 1 wave maker + 2 power heads + return
Juvenille fish: 2 clown and 1 blue tang
Frags: 3 monti ( 2 plating - red cap and supernatural + 1 branchi hersuta) 1 zoa - 1 gsp - 1 yellow hammer
1 baby RBTA
CUC: 3 mexican turbo, 1 emerald crab, 6 blue leg hermit, 1 red leg hemit, 4-5 trochus, 2 nassarius

parameters:
0 ammonia
0.25 nitrite (spiked after hurricane as i removed most fish/snails for 3 days, i added more microbacter7; levels slowly dropping from the spike to almost 1)
10 nitrate

salinity/gravity 1.024 (dropped a bit after lots of moving, spills etc and ATO dropping rodi with the hurrican changes, about to slowly increase it)
Wasn't able to test phosphate but will soon, not sure if that will matter
Temp 77.5-79.5

History:
Tank started end of July
Had diatoms twice
recently had green algea everywhere that my cuc mostly cleared
past 3 days brown stuff started spreading a little, i was hopping it would just be diatoms again and wouldnt worry too much as it would die if my nitrate bottoms out. But this morning it doubled in size and now looks like so many little bubles over it and started spreading on rocks too

Thanks for your help!

Alex

And stop testing nitrite; start testing phosphate.
I dont test often, i happen to have nitrite test available so i might as well test it, that also gives me an idea weither or not i will have a lot of added nitrates coming from nitrites.

I do not have a phosphate test kit yet, any recommendations? I heard Salifert is great. Just as i said, broke af right now lol.

Will start syphoning asap thanks!

Dont worry about rbta as it will shrink a little. Or you can blue as described below:
Its biological deficiencies that are causing the dino structure.
Turn lights off (at least white and run blue at 10% IF you have light dependant corals such as SPS) for 5 days and at night dose 1ml of 3% hydrogen peroxide per 10 gallons for all 5 nights which works as an oxidizer. If you dont have light dependent coral- turn all lights off. During the day dose 1ml of liquid bacteria (such as micro bacter 7 or XLM) per 10 gallons. Clean filters daily and DO NOT FEED AMINO OR ADD NOPOX which is food for dinos, however you can feed coral, food which will help no3 and po4 to increase. If increasing nutrients, try to keep no3 to about 5 until you are done battling these cells.
Doing a daily siphoning will help greatly But . . . . . Siphoning will reduce nutrients , so siphon the water into/through a filter sock and save the water and return it back to tank. Obviously clean the filter sock each time.
You can feed fish as normal and if doing blackout, ambient light in room will work for them

Thanks @vetteguy53081 i was hopping you'd jump in! Based on my listed corals seems like i will keep blue on.
I just syphoned 5g out and refilled with fresh saltwater rodi as i needed a little boost in salinity and am now just reading that.

I typically just spot feed phyto once or twice a week and for fish i feed a bottle mix of frozen mixed food/pellets/garlic/selcon and add a bit of phyto as well. Can i keep doing that?
I usually do 2-4 feedings a day.

1) you need a microscope to ID Dinos. They are microscopic. It’s like taking a picture of a drop of blood and asking how many red blood cells are in there.
2) read the attached doc for support.

Seriously, new tank dinos are best managed the way I described. I use a turkey baster to suck up the crud, put this into a container, let it settle, and then you can add the clear water back to the tank if you want. You don't need to remove a lot of tank water to get the stuff out. You can also blow it off the sand and rock and use a net to collect the grungies ;)
