Hello,

I have set up a new tank which is cycling while I get all of my equipment in order.

We have endured quite the fiasco with skimmers.

1. We purchased a AquaMaxx CO-2 skimmer on clearance. The pump was insanely loud so BRS just refunded me the amount to put towards a new skimmer and let me know if I fix it then feel free to keep it as they will no longer carry replacement parts.

2. I bought a Bubble Magus Curve 7 Elite and am getting a similar noise. I am honestly questioning at this point if either I am doing something wrong or maybe sicce pumps are incredibly loud (both skimmers included scicce pumps).

*I tested a super old Curve 5 and its quiet
*I also tested the new Curve 7 Elite in a 5 gallon bucket and it was still super loud.

Has anyone had any experience with new skimmers radiating a loud humming noise? Do these pumps maybe need to "break in".

I have seen a couple similar posts but they kind of just end with no resolution so I'm not sure if it resulted in an RMA support ticket or not.

If you want quiet, DC is the way to go.
I have an octopus regal 150s in my bedroom and I can't hear it at all.

My 9430dc I run on a 150 and have ran it on an 120 & 80g.
9410dc is on my 50g frag system.

My CO-1 was noisy, not loud, until it broke in. I can still hear it but all other equipment has to be off. How long did you give them to break in? In a new tank with a lack of organics, it can take some time. I was not happy when it was new but it is much quieter now.

It has not broken and there are little to no organics at the moment.

I’m more worried about the pump noise/vibrations and less so about the sounds of bubbling water.

I will let it run for 2 days to see if the pump needs time to settle.

It should settle in.. I have had all sorts of bubble Magnus skimmers from the curve 5 to a giant nac-10. Currently I’m running a curve 9 elite and it’s dead quiet!

If its running on an AC the hum will always be there.

I just bought two DC Sicce's for my Avast Skimmer. If these things are noisy I'm going to be p!ssed

I've been running an Aquamaxx ConeS Q-2 (which uses a sicce shark pump) for about a year now and find it to be a great skimmer.

No louder than the Tunze 9410 DC it replaced.

Took a few days to break in, but even out of the box it really wasn't very loud.

I assume you took the pump apart and put it back together ... just to make sure the impeller and housing covers were seated properly and didn't get misaligned during assembly or by jostling during shipping?

I agree with malacoda. I have 2 of the AquaMaxx ConeS Q3 skimmers and if everything isn’t seated properly and the mounts put on tight the vibrations are bad but otherwise they are reasonable. On the other hand, my Reef Octopus 250INT is a DC skimmer that I just replaced one of the ConeS skimmers with and it is much quieter with zero vibration sound. If you are noise sensitive then the DC skimmers are the way to go.

An Iwaki 55 on the left, and a blueline 40x running an external MRC MR1 skimmer on the right. Set up is dual 60 gal frag tanks above. Very dependable equipment. Keeping things out of the sump although noisier is still a plus IMO. Marine life growth and junk in the intakes can be problematic.
