Hi!

I'm trying to buy my first acros online and really it's impossible! How on earth should I know what a "Creamy Banana Split Smoothie Double Vanilla Shot ACRO" or something like that is? Why not say TORT, TENUIS, MILLE etc? I can't research those ridiculous names! Am I just supposed to recognize the acro specie from the pics? Guys how on earth do I navigate this?!?!?

You are better off just buying off of appearance and price. All acros pretty much have the same care anyways.

Really? That is so unsatisfying. That is just not how my brain works. I need to know the species and read all about it before buying.
As I have understood there's easier acros like torts and stags and more diffucult ones like tenuis and mille.

Yeah I am the exact same way. I am used to keeping insects, arachnids, and freshwater aquaria, where I can pinpoint the exact species of everything to do precise research. But you just kind of got to adapt with how the reefing world goes I guess.:grinning-face-with-sweat:

The vendor should be able to tell you the scientific name. That said, some are really close in appearance and could be hard to distinguish.

If you want a site that offers just the scientific name try battlecorals.com. you'll want to hit the "no glitz" option too; he likes ridiculous names, no glitz removes that.

Lol trust me....I know the feeling. The problem is each vendor gives their acro its' own name so you have the same species with several different names. Without knowing lineage you have no idea where each acro came from. As stated, you should be able to get a general idea from the vendor but that is about it. Yes there are some easier to keep acros than others, but they all have the same general care. Those easier to keep varieties are pretty easy to identify fortunately.

I'm just like you... So when I was first dipping my toes in the world of acropora I wanted the hardiest possible Acro.. so I chose the Acros based off the responses to these threads discussing easy/hardy Acropora. (https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/w...-of-acropora-are-the-easiest-hardiest.400444/ https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/easiest-acro-is-there-such-a-thing-as-an-easy-acro.935449/ https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/hardiest-acropora-in-the-hobby.404579/) I tallied up the results and chose the top three, see below. Over 30 Acros were suggested as being “easy” however I’ve only included the ones that got multiple responses, unsurprisingly Green Slimer topped the chart.

Wow amazing that yo did this! I have actually read those threads also and had an idea - but not a whole overview like this! :star-struck::star-struck::star-struck::star-struck::star-struck:I was planning on finding tha PC Rainbow, tricolor valida as my first ones and also the Miyaki tort. Because I was pretty certain that those could be identified. and also I had learend that they might not require sooo much light as some others. How did it go for you? Did you get these? Do you know which species the garf bonsai and red planet is?

Yeah I see. So asking the vendor might be a good idea. And maybe the only way to know...

Chop shops don’t care about species and their fancy names help inflate the price of the booger size pieces they sell.

I started with the green slimer. I think you'll find most folks recommend it as a first acro. Once mine started puddling out it's growth really took off. That gave me the confidence to order a first batch including a Valida, Red Planet, and Oregon Tort, all have been cruising for me. I recently added a Walt Disney, PC rainbow, and Pink lemonade... They seem to be settling in well though the WD is getting less flow and has a bit less polyp extension. I'm not sure the specific species name for each but these are common enough I'm sure you can find them. I'm working my way right down the chart as you can see!
