I try to keep minimum rock on the sand and lots of mounting spots while also have hiding spots for the fish. It's a hard job to do, no pun intended.

First thing I do is try to figure out what's causing it. Often I'll glue over the necrosis if I can or snip of the dead/dying portion just at the edge of the live flesh to keep it from spreading as readily, but without fixing the problem it won't stop. Phosphates seem to be the most common cause for me in my tanks so I usually check my levels, give a small dose of Loudwolf phosphates, and check my doser to see why we're low. Alkalinity has been another one and I'll do water changes to bring that down if it's getting too high.

RTN, I don't think there is a full understanding of the cause and treatment, so prevention is anecdotal?

The word on the reef is that it is caused by unsteady parameters, specifically alk, but again I believe that is unproven. Obvious "prevention" steps include keeping tank parameters stable.

The first response to RTN is typically Terror, Anxiety & Dread (TAD), followed often by anger and frustration when the reefer has been struggling with shifting parameters, or not. They post on here; I am a TAD PO'd because my favorite colony* started (sometimes finished) RTN'ing last night.

The response is often to cut off the healthy tips of the colony to try and save a frag from the colony. Sometimes the frags will live, but I have seen large colonies (softball sized) start to RTN that were fragged and still all the frags progressed in the progressive disease and they all died, wasting a ton of plugs and Super Glue Gel .


*The Experienced Reefer Knows that an RTN incident will almost always start with the most favorite colony or frag in the tank, and then progress to infect and kill all of the high dollar specimens first. In the end, the GSP survives just to spite the tank keeper who often has a pile of frag skeletons in a jar next to their calcium reactor.

Snip good tissue and mount.
Pray.

They can come back, I have proof.
This looked completly dead 2 months ago except a couple polyps. Just look at her now!

I'm curious, was/is that your favorite colony? Did the tissue loss start at the base and you saved some tips?

Not my favorite.
This was just a common purple Acro I never knew the name. It just completely died back just before I swap tanks. I threw it in there after Ivermectin dose to kill spionid worms. I honestly didn't think it was going to start growing again.

My favorite was my Oregon tort, that one I sadly lost in the move.

DAILY QUESTION: How do you prevent and handle coral RTN (Rapid Tissue Necrosis)?

To prevent it, i try to keep all water parameters stable. Unfortunately the one time i had to deal with RTN my normal parameters checked good. Did several large water changes, over a couple of days. I was able to track it down to a rusted nut plate in my return pump, at least thats what i suspect caused it.

I quarantine in hopes to keep bad bacteria out of the tank along with pests. Keeping your water stable helps in not having RTN.
