Just thought i post this since most of us got one or more corals in our reef tanks.

Great Barrier Reef hit with widespread and severe bleaching event

The Great Barrier Reef is being hit with a widespread and severe bleaching event, just three days before a UN delegation is due to arrive to assess the health of the world heritage area.

I've seen huge areas of bleached coral, it's tragic and disastrous for all organisms.

I Heard that on the radio yesterday too.
For starters it's winter here in Australia so you won't see corals bleach atm.
Secondly i would love to see the comparison of bleaching vs new growth. If our summer will get as hot as the European one then that new growth will diminish between all the white skeletons.

That's funny...i don't remember you posting I did 1 my own 2 research 3. saying that to the original OP. They provide one article, with one persons opinion, but because it's text and not spoken word its somehow more valid. Skynews name drops the professor who made the claims, pretty easy to "research".

I don't know if what this guy says is true or not....just merely presenting an apposing set of data points. If bleaching is occuring...but its growing faster than it can bleach as claimed by Ridd, then that would make "bleaching" a mute point.

Tank at 85.3degrees only 15 gallons no ac probably high temp for today as usual temps will lower during the evening and reach the lowest temperatures during the morning hours the inhabitants of my system do not seem to react negatively to the temperatures as long as they do not increase and cool off during the evening and night!

What do I take out of this? The Gbr is recovering mostly at a great rate but future heat stresses might lead to more mass bleaching events.
You got to remember too that in the last two years Australia had La Nina rather then El Ninio like 2017/18 where the bleaching was worse.

You got to remember too that in the last two years Australia had La Nina rather then El Ninio like 2017/18 where the bleaching was worse.

And most of the coral growing back is more susceptible to heat stress, more easily broken by wave action, and more vulnerable to being decimated by crown of thorns starfish.

The regrowth is not an apples to apples comparison...

Yes life will go on.. like always. But I wish we could save most of the beauty and complexity for who's coming next. So many things that make us happy and fascinate us might not be there anymore for being enjoyed by someone else. We (in this hobby) probably understand this better than others.
