There has been a lot of speculation that copepods may be damaged by aquarium pump impellers. New research that looks at boat impellers may give insight into this theory. HERE

What do you guys think? Are they comparing apples to oranges?

Im going for the apples to oranges thought on this. Someone is reaching for something just to put out there I think.

I completely agree. It would be one thing of there was a scale to the size of the pods. Boat impeller is a lot bigger and more powerful than our prop pumps we use. Anyway, abviously there are going to be more fatalities there than other areas.

I dont know, the props on a mp60 and some larger tunzes are pretty powerful. Not to mention large return pumps like the reefflo.

Second that - This is a pretty big stretch! While some pods probably get chopped up, i know a decent amount make it to my DT.

Unless your reeflo pump uses a prop, which it doesn't, you can't even include that in to this. They are talking about prop pumps not impeller style pumps. The mp60 and other aquarium prop pumps don't use 1" or greater props for their pumps. Even at a slower speed, boat props push more water and create more turbulance. There is no way to compare the two.

"Prior studies had showed that even a small amount of turbulence can affect a copepod’s ability to feed and grow"

Though not entirely detrimental to the copepod population in our tanks, still good food for thought.
