Clownfish do this weird movement where they seem to swim down into the floor, are they scratching their gills? Attached is another video to demonstrate breathing rate of clownfish on the right, it seems a bit quick to me. They have just been through 3 rounds of praziquantel treatment 10 days apart (2.5ml/L) for suspected flukes, as they were piping, had faster breathing than shown in the video, head twitching and would not eat. Now there is no more head twitching present, and they eat voraciously.

The clowns are still breathing a bit faster than they should be. The downward swimming motion is what clowns do in a bare tank.

Does the tank have good aeration (not just circulation, but bubbles actually breaking the surface)?
Is the ammonia level near zero?

Hi Jay,

I have a sponge filter breaking the surface really well with bubbles. Ammonia level is zero, (tested it with a ammonia badge and an API ammonia test, if unreliable maybe I should dose seachem prime and see if there is any change?). QT tank was fed and started with Dr Tim’s One and Only for 3 weeks before I purchased the clownfish.

Hi Vetteguy,

Let me know if these links work, never uploaded to youtube before

Looks like fish is playing with its reflection and will do this with lack of substrate in some cases
Flashing often associated with flukes will also show a given fish losing appetite, heavy breathing, sudden darting as examples

Okay thank you very much, lost my first and only fish to brookynella so learnt my lesson real early about quarantine. These two clowns had flukes before and just wanted to make sure that wasn’t any form of flashing as it has been the only consistent thing after treatment.
