Greetings all,

I guess I'm studying my tank too much because each day I'm finding out something new. :confused: I noticed that the clown that likes to take breaks on the substrate has a swollen and cloudy eye on the right side. Also I can see a little bit of seperation between some of his tail fins in the up close video. This one was the aggressor so I don't "think" its the result of fighting. I noticed a day or 2 ago that its eyes didn't appear as sharp and defined as the other clownfish so when if was resting i was able to look with my magnifying glass to confirm what i thought.

I've been "feeding" this tank kanaplex in food for the last 5days because there was a clown that i've now returned that had fin rot. Was planning to stop the kanaplex treatments in 2 more days per the instructions of 1 week treatment.

Tank currently has pair of clowns, crabs, snails and coral

When I feed the tank both clowns are up and very active eating.

Tank size 13.5gallon
Tank age: 3weeks
API ammonia test was slightly green .25ppm
Seachem ammonia alert badge 0
Seachem free ammonia test 0
Nitrites 0
Nitrates are between 5-20 hard to read the API colors but "looks" like 10 but could be 20
Salinity is 1.024
PH 7.9
Temp 80

What do you all see in the pictures and videos .....
Does the left eye look a little swollen and cloudy also?
What do you advise that I do as next steps
I don't have a QT tank but could set one up today and use some media from this tank in a HOB with some biospira if necessary
* or any other emergency QT setup advise
I've got epsom salt also, but have read mixed suggestions on using it
Never done/tried a FW dip

Is the affected clown still feeding?

What I see is that it is breathing pretty past, has the fin damage you noted, and both eyes are hazy, with the left one being worse than the other. More troublesome is the apparent negative buoyancy - when it stops swimming, it sinks right to the bottom and seems to struggle to swim.

Can’t see videos but cloudy eyes can be all sorts of things. He might be dealing with a disease or an internal parasite. Is he laying often on his side on sand bed or on a rock?

Yes ... it is eating well. I've been feeding medicated brine shrimp once a day. 1st SW tank and never seen clownfish swim so not familiar with negative buoyancy. I've heard they swim and act strange so not sure what to look for or how to treat. Thanks for any and all help. @Jay Hemdal @dedragon

I have a suspicion that this is injury from aggression with the looks of fins, etc.
Treatment would ne ethromyacin AKA Maracyn 1 which is very effective.

QT would be best
@vetteguy53081 @Jay Hemdal @dedragon

OK ... so my game plan is :

(1) start a 5 or 10gallon QT tank tonight. (does the size matter)
ro/di water
salt to match DT
heater
powerhead to mix salt

(2)
tomorrow AM add
* HOB filter
* floss from DT
* media balls from DT
* bottle of biospira

(3)
tomorrow PM add
sick clown only or both clowns?
dose WATER with kanaplex
order Maracyn 1

(4)
daily 25% water changes
every other day feed mysis or brine shrimp (is there another frequency or type of food recommendation) i also have TDO-c2 pellets

what other medication should i add to water? i also have metroplex and API® E.M. ERYTHROMYCIN on hand
anything I should buy for stress coat like Melafix for marine
should i feed medicated or non medicate food since i'm dosing the water directly

10 gallon adequate. Assure there is good oxygen or air stone for QT
Plan looks good. On the HOB filter, cut the top of cartridge and shake out the carbon onto a paper towel and save it. Run your filter and Maracyn, After treatment , add the carbon back into cartridge

Can I treat with Kanaplex and Maracyn 1 at the same time?

Kanaplex, yes but no need for it UNLESS you are seeing signs/symptom of bacteria. As for both, you can but a question for myself, do I want to treat a fish with no symptoms?

Ok ... thanks for the feedback, i thought the Kanaplex would help with the fin issues and the Maracyn 1 would take care of the eye. So the thought is Maracyn 1 will take care of both. Got it !!

The fins appear nipped rather than fin/tail rot, otherwise Kanaplex would help

@dedragon i know kanaplex dosed to entire tank is not safe for inverts, not sure about corals. So i've set up a 10gallon QT tank tonight .... going to let it sit for 24hrs to make sure everything is stable with the water parameters, salinity matching DT, and then add bacteria and the clowns so i can treat with the Maracyn and any other recommended treatments till they are 100% well. I ordered some ammonia badges but will also check ammonia daily and do frequent water changes because Maracyn degrades the biofilter,.

Hi is there a difference in effectiveness of EM Erythromycin vs Mardel Maracyn since both are Erythromycin based? My LFS does not carry the Mardel Maracyn as recommended to treat my clownfish. I'd have to order online and wait but wanted to confirm if it's worth waiting for or just get EM Erythromycin and 2nd round treat with Mardel if needed.

Unless the products give the amount of active ingredients, there isn’t any way to really compare them. I looked at the links but didn’t see that. I imagine that they are pretty similar though - 250 mg each?

Thanks …. I started the EM Erythromycin and Kanaplex combined in water. I’ve also ordered the Mardel Maracyn which should arrive on Tuesday which would be the day after I end a round of treatments for Erythromycin. If everything is not cleared up I can do the 2nd round with the Maracyn.

Do you think using Melafix now in the QT tank would help? And if so is it best to use the “marine” vs freshwater version
