I played around with the D40 the other day and man I may make the upgrade. It is an awesome camera especially for the price. The 6.5fps is impressive. :D

It's either the D40 or the Mark III...:hammer:

How did you like the live view finder? I'm sooooooo close to upgrading my Rebel. Did you see that recent 35% off (now dead) deal w/ MS Live? I missed it by about an hour or I would have upgraded already.

Seems to me, that live view finder would be invaluable for top-down shots when your camera is housed in an underwater box.

I dig that wi-fi transmitter too -- but it costs a ton...

the 40D rocks..... ;)

(not to be confused with the D40 which is a Nikon...blehhh)

live view is helpful for macro stuff b/c you can digitally zoom in to see if you are focused. but you obviously can't see the screen when there is allot of light around (i.e. outside). it would help for top downs as long as you don't get glare from the MH on the screen.

my next purchases will include a bag, new tripod, battery grip, extension tubes, flash ring....and the list goes on.....ugh....$$$$

i can't ever see myself needing to upgrade from the 40D for at least 3-4 years until the next new piece of technology comes out.

also something really cool to note about the 40D. You can view a real time histogram. Which is really cool. Other cameras you can only see them after the picture has been taken. Now you can make adjustments before you even capture it.

In the underwater-box scenario: do you think you could kind of cup your hand over the viewfinder and see enough to know that you are at least pointing at the coral you intend to? I let auto-focus do the focusing for me in that scenario. But I'll shoot 30 wild shots hoping one comes in focus of the piece I'm after.

I could hook up a cable to my Rebel I suppose and use BreezeSystems software. But it would be nice not to need a laptop nearby.

I wonder if you can view the viewfinder remotely like I can using PSRemote (from BreezeSystems) on my Canon G2?

why not just use the live view?

if its the angle you are concerned about, they do make attachments for viewfinders that basically aim a camera down the viewfinder and then have a flexible arm with a 2-3" LCD that can be positioned at any angel. However a good one will set you back 300 or so.

Ah, looks like the BreezeSystems stuff will work w/ the live viewfinder and the 40D!

Full frame and zoomed live view display on the PC screen is available in DSLR Remote Pro with the Canon EOS-1D Mark III, Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III, Canon EOS 40D, Canon EOS 450D/Digital Rebel XSi/Kiss Digital X2. Also displays live histogram data and allows lens focus to be adjusted from the PC.

I had considered one of those remote angle things. But I would like to use the live view as you mentioned. The tangent conversation was using the camera in an underwater box nearly directly under the halides. The halides are going to drown out the live-view screen. And you don't want to stick your neck right under that halide, heh!

So my thought was that by shielding the live view LCD from the halide, I could still see the live view LCD, albeit from an angle.

Does that make any sense? LOL!
