Maybe a dumb questions. . . but I am working on setting up an ATO for an all in one tank. My understanding is this should go into the return chamber. . . however, my only experience with an AIO tank is my fluval evo, and it's return chamber seems to get low when the filter gets a bit clogged. . . is this in my head? Can mechanical filtration clog enough to slow flow and lower the water level without being so clogged that the return runs dry?

Certainly can in an AIO.

Make sure you pull that mechanical filtration every couple days to wash it out, or replace it. One of the downfalls of an AIO.

Yes, because the partially clogged filter creates more resistance. To overcome this increased resistance requires more pressure which is achieved by more water height. As the volume for this increased water height comes out of the return section, a little clog can have a big impact.
