Oof. Handled these a ton when I was fishing around in the live rock bin. And when I put them in the tank. Thanks for the information.
Yikes. Hopefully they are zoas in which case some don't have much paly toxin. Still, research paly toxin poisoning and know the symptoms. If you feel one of the symptoms, get medical care right away. Paly toxin can get into the blood stream through unprotected skin.

Lots of people keep palys. Most people never have an issue. Some zoas contain paly toxin as well. The problem is there isn’t a list of toxic zoas and some palys get labeled as zoas. I have one zoa colony that I just won’t clean around any more as I seem to be sensitive to whatever it has going on. First thing I noticed was a metallic taste. Then I was just sick and quite frankly more than a little worried. I’m considering pulling the colony and dumping it in a bucket of bleach.

Many corals have toxins. Some close to the level of paly toxin. It’s smart not to put bare hands in your tank (or bare skin) also because of the bacteria in the tank.

Big time. When I had zoas many years ago, I had NO idea. Handled them without gloves. Lucked out. It was on this forum I learned of the toxin.

If you have kids in the house, you may want to ditch them. I would.

Thanks for the kind words! It's been 3 weeks since I handled them, so I'm pretty sure I'm okay haha.

Even if you handle them with gloves to scrape them off or eliminate them somehow or cook/boil them off. Bad news. The toxins will exist and live in the air. Google some stories to hear the range and scope of these corals. Keeping them in a healthy tank is great. Attempting to discard them, risky.

Update to anyone interested; they're developing a really interesting neon green center, surrounded by a maroon ring, and then neon green tips. The camera isn't picking it up super well, but I tried to capture it.

Really cool hitchhikers! Palys most likely...possibly a type of zoa but not as likely. Read up on Pallys and issues associated with them. I got a dose of their toxin early on. It was very light but it wasn't fun. Just take proper precautions and enjoy them.

Thanks for the heads up. Other people commented the same so I definitely read up. In general it was a good reminder to up my water hygiene (wear gloves, wash thoroughly, maybe don't fish through the live rock tank with my bare hands, etc.).

From my research it seems like a good indicator of the truly toxic palys is to look for ridges around the polyps, as the dangerous ones are smooth. Mine do have ridges, but I'm still being cautious anyway.

My mom and mother in law have been in the hospital in the last few month...funny how PPE is just lying around in those places. I got enough gloves to start a zoa/pally fragging business...lol

Yep I heard of someone was doing something in a bucket with palys in the house and all the family had ill effects off them .They are nice looking but if you don’t use ppe there bad for your health. In the late 80s we didn’t have this information then wondered why we got rashes and upset stomachs . Someone on this forum lost his sight in one eye when he rubbed his eyes after messing around with palys
