Can a canister filter intake be used instead of a HOB overflow.

This might be a super dumb question but I am very new to sumps but have recently started a DIY sump and my only option right now is an HOB overflow which can cost a lot and has high risks if not done perfectly, so I’m wondering if maybe I can somehow use a canister filter intake to bring water down into the sump.
