Calling all Maroon clownfish lovers!!!

I feel like maroon clowns are the pitties of the hobby. Seems like everyone hates them and is like DO NOT GET ONE. I personally love maroons! So I wanted to start a thread about maroons to share with everyone and for people to share their maroons!!! Ill start and tell you about Scarlet and Little Guy.

As many of you know I have a thing for rescue fish or fish that just need a home. I came across this maroon clownfish at my LFS one day. She was all by herself. 3 inches. She was being sold for 15 dollars. When I asked the store owner about her he said I didnt want that fish that she was a terror. He said theyve had her months now and that her owner brought her in saying she had murdered a tang and a trigger in his tank. Im sitting there looking at this cute and stunning fish while the owner is telling me shes essentially the Ted Bundy of the fish world. He was saying how maroons are just pure evil and all this other stuff. I decided I want her. He gave her to me for 10 dollars instead of 15. Im walking out of the store with this cute and just stunning girl and another customer sees her and is like oh good luck hope youre not attached to any fish youre going to put her with. Im like oh god what did I get myself into.

A few weeks later I had done a ton of research and read how hard it was to pair maroons. But I took the chance and ordered a gold nugget maroon. When I pulled him out of the package he was the size of a dime! I thought oh great shes gonna murder him since she was about 3 inches. After a few weeks of him being in the acclimation box I released him and just held my breath. She comes up to him and they just freaking start swimming together! No fighting. She didnt let him sleep in her nem for a good two months but one day I noticed they were in separable and now hosting the same nem!! I went from thinking I had Ted Bundy to having the sweetest water puppy ever. I named her Scarlet after her coloring. The gold nugget never got a name actually, always just called him Little Guy since I was expecting her to just murder him one day. So Little Guy became his name!

Well that was a year ago now. I now have this amazing maroon clownfish that is the sweetest fish Ive ever seen. Shes grown a fair amount and is just stunning. Queen of my tank for sure. Only time shes ever been mean was to my other two butthole damsel fish when they step out of line and bully another fish. She comes in and chases the damsels away into their caves then goes back about her business! She comes up to the glass when she sees me and she also comes up and swims around my hand calmly. I can also pet her! She loves it. Little Guy on the other hand is developing more into a typical maroon clown. He bumps my hand when its in the tank now, expecting him to start biting soon. His favorite thing is to attack my mag float when Im cleaning the glass. Boy does he hit that so hard sometimes! I love these two. So beautiful!!

If I ever do a fowlr I would add another pair with a nem of some sort. My last female (had a pair) took over almost half of a 6ft tank. I couldn't even add coral to her rocks because she would rip them off. Mine were gold stripe and the female was beautiful but I wanted coral so they were rehomed.

LOL my picasso trigger does this on my tank! And if its glued she throws sand all over it until I have to move it!

I have my maroon pair in a tank by themselves with BTA and a few inverts. My youngest son picked up Swim Shady, our gold nugget clown, first from our LFS. By herself she was very aggressive and quickly earned her own nano tank even though she was still small. We decided to take a risk and try to pair her up but she violently rejected our first two attempts. It took over two months before she decided Maroon 5 was acceptable.


We picked up Maroon 5, the gold X lightning cross, from ORA and kept the two of them beside each other in acclimation boxes for over two months, allowing them only brief supervised visits together in the tank.

It took a few battered fins and some repeat jail time for domestic violence charges, but they have finally agreed not to kill each other. I don't know if I would truly call them a "pair" yet but they tolerate each other and swim together during the day. At night they still sleep in separate beds (anemones) though.

Maroon clowns are beautiful and fun, but very stubborn when it comes to love. Ocellaris are usually willing to pair with whoever shows up, but not maroons.

What has worked the best for me pairing them has been to get a single and let it grow out for a year or so then add the smallest I can find. Ive had 100% success doing it this way tho I've only paired maroons 3 times. Adding a young male too soon has resulted in death for me.

She ended up hurting her eye, but its all healed up now so disregard the cloudiness lol. Shes an absolute menace in my 125g but she was our first fish so its hard to part with her

If we ever move into my dream home I want a second tank, an anemone cube with a pair of maroons. Limited to one decent sized tank where I'm at now, dont want to risk losing something for a clownfish

Ahhh the gold nugget is beautiful!!! Little Guy is starting to get his gold in and Im excited. They are stunning!

I’m the aquatic specialist at an LFS and I have this little maroon that I lovingly call Little Evil. He’s been here for about 7 months and no one wants him because he’s murdered any other fish I’ve put in with him and he will take chunks out of your fingers (or at least try to) whenever you do anything in his tank. I’ve been trying to find a good home for him where he gets to be the only fish in the tank but to no avail so I’m working on setting up his own nano reef currently. Every time I get a new manicure I stick my fingers in to show him my new nails and let him go at me. Everyone else that goes into that tank for hermit crabs (his inly tolerated tank mates) has to net him while they are in there because they are terrified of him. I like giving him different evil nicknames, sometimes he’s Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, I called him redruM for a solid week, Beelzebub, Lucifer, and the names go on. Safe to say I’m obsessed with him and his evil little self and can’t wait to bring him home. But I would never chance my angelic Phantom Ocellaris at home by throwing him in my established tank.

I’ve always loved the gold stripe maroon clowns, i was looking for a pair of large one’s for a long time, I finally got lucky about the year ago and found a large pair of the lightning stripe maroons, all I could say now is I deeply regret getting them, I hate them. I don’t care that they attack my hands anytime I put it in the tank but every time I put a new Coral in, they always have to attack it and move it from wherever I put it, I don’t know anything I put in now has to get glued down or they will damage it, it’s definitely been a case of be careful what you wish for

Sounds a lot like my Ocellaris clown, she rejected the male at first but they are paired up now sharing the same fake nem and following each other around. I saw a maroon at my LFS and wanted it but they said I shouldn't since they are hard to pair and I'm a first-time clownfish owner so obviously I'd want a pair. But I will try this in the future.

I have a 24g with a 2in gold strip maroon and a few corals
recently added a mini maxi carpet nem but she keeps throwing sand ALL over it. I love her and wanted to pair her with a smaller lighting maroon but not sure if I’m going to have the patience with her throwing sand everywhere ‍
