My clowns have decided they want to be parents. They've had a few clutches, and they seem to be in a rhythm. So far, they're just making fish food but I'm thinking about trying to raise some. From what I've read, it seems that raising food for the fry is the most involved part of the process. Anybody have first-hand experience with how much work it is involved in growing phyto, rots, and shrimp. Some say it's just a few minutes per day and others act like it is pure torture.

Thanks,
Ivan

a single rotifer getting into your phyto is the end of your phyto. Breeders that I know have mostly moved to frozen concentrated phyto. The rotifers take work as well. You need the manually control the population. Hatching artemia isnt a big deal. The other part of the equation is keeping the larval tanks clean and syphoning them after each frequent feeding. I own the books on the subject if you would like to check them out at some point but I did just loan them to @Gregorjw a few days ago. My wife wanted to raise the clutches laid by our old spotcinctus until I made her flip through the book...after that she never mentioned it again.

I've read a few books, so I know there's some work involved but I think it would be cool for my kids to see. I'm just trying to get a feel for how much effort is actually involved. Some people complain about 15 minutes of work per day and others don't think twice about it.

I'm sure frozen works for full-time breeders, but that stuff can be expensive. With live food, I can feed my tank the excess (that's the plan anyway).
