Bleached?

Please forgive my newness to the Zoa world, but I have read a lot about corals being bleached. Is the a literal meaning, like a chemical was used to lighten them, or is it referring to the coral not getting enough light so it loses it's color?

Bleaching can occur when zoas (or any coral) is exposed to excessive heat or light. The zoa will expell all its zooxanthellia, resulting in a loss of color and food for the zoa. They usually can recover in a few months, but it will take time, patience and pristine conditions.

It is also good to spot-feed heavily, during this time.
