Maybe it's just getting enough pods when you're not looking?
I have one each of Bangaii and Pajama cardinals and they both hunt pods off the rocks, mostly in the evenings.

FWIW, I mostly feed LRS Reef Frenzy Nano (frozen) and both my cardinals love it.
*only flakes I have are more for herbivores and my cardinals won't touch those either

I waited till near lights out. Still a little intimidated by other fish. Will wait till later tomorrow
Does the bang have a place to hide? Mine hides under frogspawn when it fully opens

Not sure I have big enough numbers for a mandarin and a Banggai. My fault for not researching this fish before hand
Banggai don’t need copepods to survive in your tank just mysis or what ever it eats
