Here goes... I have developed a mild obsession with this in-floor shark tank from a mansion in California. The concept is to depress slab some 30" and have a Fowler tank withs small aquarium sharks, skates and fish. Full disclosure, I have already applied for building permit with this tank designed in my slab. We renamed the area "garden" because of the heckling and also I imagined the trades doubling their prices on a house with this kind of silliness. That said the construction is sound. I am in commercial construction in concrete and waterproofing. There is a mechanical/ room 14 feet away. I was planning on sand filtration as well as monster skimmer... What are your thoughts?

Honestly, there are no small aquarium sharks. Given enough food and time they get big. I personally would leave the sharks and rays in the ocean. Their waste generation is explosive to say the least. So filtration is best with a trickle tower to aid in oxygen levels. Some require chillers if they are from temperate waters. The sand filter works but if you have a power outage it kills fish fast. The tower is simple and works better in my experience. Sea World use to inject controlled levels of ozone directly into the tanks to keep oxygen levels high. Again controlled is the key as there should be no residual smell of ozone as it is not great for humans. A very large protein skimmer with ozone injection and a carbon scrubber is the safest way to use ozone.

Sharks and rays have specific eating requirements and often that includes live foods. Just be prepared to have them eat your lunch expense wise.

Nice idea with the garden concept. Avoid corners in the design and use more round corners for the sharks. They don't encounter 90 degree corners in the ocean hahaha.

Just a few thoughts from experience.

Understood on the shark portion of the equation, I am more concerned with the feasibility, the plumbing ,the basic design. Why isn't anyone doing this? It is situated under the stairs in that unused area. is there anything intrinsically wrong with this design for a fowler tank.

If you do a search on concrete aquariums in this forum you will see several that are completed and running. Not a big deal with your skills. There is even some people who used swimming pools for fish tanks.

Short tail nurse and Epaulettes get 3ft and make for reasonably sized sharks in tanks that are large enough. Bamboos as well but those are much more common in the trade

Reef Aquarium Design has done these types of installations. Might want to consult with them as to filtration needs as well as other tips.
