My new aquamaxx hob 1.5 has been running on my tank for about 6 days now, here is my take so far. First of all it pulls a lot of gunk! Here is a photo of 6 days worth:

Secondly, it puts out a TON of bubbles into the display. The bubbles are both micro and larger as well. This means my DT always has some micro bubbles floating around and the larger bubbles pop next to the skimmer outflow causing a bunch of salt creep.

I've used several other HOB skimmers in the past including reef octopus, eshopps, and even the dreaded sea clown. So far the aquamaxx pulls the most gunk but puts out the most bubbles.

I'm surprised that you still have micro bubbles after 6 days, but it should clear up soon hopefully. Mine puts out no micro bubbles, except for when I clean it, then I get micro bubbles for a day or two.

But it definitely is a good unit. Good luck with that.

I took a short video for you, this is how it should be, or will be soon.

Dang that would be awesome! Was yours ever like mine?

I noticed that some micro bubbles are escaping past the clear plastic divider that slides into the body to separate the skimming section from the outflow section. I'm wondering if the fit is off in mine somehow.

Where is your collection cup adjusted too? Ant tips?

Thanks

Only in the beginning it was like yours, I can't remember for how long though, that was almost 5 years ago, but I do remember being annoyed with the micro bubbles at the time.

I have the cup all the way down to the bottom, I usually empty out about 2 inches every 2 days.

Hey all,

I had one of these and I put a L shaped coupling from Home Depot or Lowes on the end of the outlet pipe. It will cut down the bubbles almost completely. Also, make sure your intake isn't near an overflow or something that generates bubbles.

You can also add a sponge of some sort to the outlet and that will end the bubbles. If you had some filter media (like the blue porous kind) that you can cut that isn't too restrictive, you can cut a circle and smash it in a little to the outlet pipe and that will end the bubbles. Don't do this unless you have some higher density (very open) type media or it could put a large strain on your pump.

@kileki - Yes, perfect for a 40 gallon and can even be used for a bit larger. Probably one of the best skimmers I ever owned. I miss the Aquamaxx line as it was Marine Depot's line before Bulk Reef bought them out and pretty much ended it. If you can get your hands on one of these skimmers, you did really good if it's in good shape. One of the best and very simple.
