I'm still rather new to this hobby - despite having set up 3 tanks, it's been a learning curve as each tank is different. In one tank in particular, I have a bunch of hammer corals that all seem to be plump and doing fine - growing and vibrant colors. I also have a Frogspawn that is splitting heads and growing nicely as well.

I have a small young hammer coral with 2 heads, and one of them seems okay, but the other head on the stalk doesn't open fully and I'm seeing some of it's flesh retracting and exposing the skeleton at the base. This is a hammer coral that I put in the tank 2 months ago, and it's just lately in the past 2 weeks I started to notice this.

I know the rule of not to change anything for the sake of one coral, but I'd like to understand why is it that sometimes some corals look healthy and appear happy while one or two don't despite all the others do well, and the water parameters are on point.

Thanks

It could be a mix of everything: flow, nutrients in your tank, lighting, or something irritating it. I have a Duncan that isn't doing too hot, but the rest of my corals are doing fine.

Corals do have a mind of their own - they have good and bad days/weeks like everyone else.

I had a Zoa that opens one day, and goes closed for a few days and then it's back to normal. It's like they are take a long nap and decide it's time to wake up.

My zoas do the same exact thing, haha.

Been having the same issues. One or two corals will do badly, and the rest will do well and grow. I've just chalked it up to a moody coral and new tank syndrome. I did more damage trying to save corals than if I'd just let it play out. It is very frustrating, but if your others are doing okay, I'm not sure you'll get an answer to your question. I hope it makes a turnaround! :)
