The problem I am have with Nerites and turbo snails/top shells, is that they always climb up and out of the water, and sit up there near the cover, until they fall down usually on their backs, then die or get eaten because they are exposed and vulnerable (by fish and hermits)

So, are there any algae eating CUC snails that don't do this?

My ceriths and astera snails don't leave the water. The astera pretty much stay on the rocks and glass. The ceriths go everywhere, under the sand, on the sand, on the rocks, and on the glass.

Like these? Mine climbed out all the time. Same for some small cerith I had. Must be different for different snails using this general name ..

Trochus will climb the glass but they can right themselves. Stomatellas are good.

Both Trochus and Stomatellas will also readily breed in the home aquarium.

They may be searching for food. I usualy have a build up of film algae just below the top of the water line and have had them hang out there. They seem to prefer it to the rocks. My Mexican turbos and zebra turbos are really the only ones I see on the rocks on a regular basis. My astrea will go to the rocks once in a while but usually stay on the glass. The only snails I've had leave the tank were trochus. My dog would hear them hit the floor and run over and grab them and I'd toss then back in. Hermits kill any ceriths.

I had put it down to them being tidal creatures, used to being left high and dry on rocks and beaches for hours.

Hermits kill any ceriths.

Didn't know that. I'd rather keep my hermits.
