About a octopus

I read a reply from this same question once. The guy said that the only good tank mate for an octopus was a very big, very heavy rock... I guess they are crazy hard because you have to have the DT totally sealed. Even all your pumps/power heads need to be protected because they will try to get into them...

You would want to do a species tank with an octopus and as Aaron said, pretty much have it escape proof. They are highly intelligent and their lifespan is fairly short. It would be cool, just not practical for most of us.
I had a Pygmy octopus in a lil 10 gallon nano with 2 clownfish for about 3 months before it died. It never tried to escape (didn't even have a lid on the tank) I think as long as you keep them happy they will stay put. They are highly intelligent even to the point to know if something will kill them or not, they won't let themselves get stuck out of water. They only make a move if they see something in the distance or if they are being really ill taken for.

I've tried keeping one with some success for almost 3 months. Eventually it lost interest in the live food that was available and died. They definitely need a special tank of their own.
My LFS has an O. vulgaris in a 90g rimless cube... He's been in there for a few weeks and I keep telling them it's only a matter of time until he finds his way to a neighboring tank. Haha

Only one to a dedicated species tank.
I collected a small one in a small Red Sea fishing town called Rabigh when I worked in Dhahran in the 70/80's. It was a great place to camp on the shore for a week and dive on a virgin reef. There's a giant refinery there now, so the reefs are long gone.
I kept him/her alone in a small tank with an under gravel filter for quite some time. You must have a secure cover with no gaps, or the little devils will go exploring. Easy and fun to feed with shrimp and small crabs. I had a ready source from the Persian Gulf, but they don't need live food. It's just fun to watch the hunt and dismemberment. Also, they are smart and will get to know you.
Caution as they do not live long normally and are sensitive water quality and copper is lethal. Again, if you'd like to try, they should be by themselves. Don't get the ones with blue rings, they are lethal to you.
(Side note: when I collected him I put him in a big bucket with a bunch of crabs. After a while all the crabs had no legs, but were still alive. Interesting way to keep your meals fresh and not going anywhere.)

Is there a specific species that are more suited for aquariums ?
Does anyone have a thread, YouTube video, book or other means explaining to us what their needs are and how to captivate etc.. ?
I think they are wonderful and interesting, and would only keep one if I had the best set-up !

Probably the ones liveaquaria sells regularly.
I've always thought it would be cool. Maybe some day. But the amount of tanks I have going I can't justify the extra electric bill for an octopus.
Just picked up an octopus today! I have a 5 gallon pico tank. I modified the lid with a bit of hot glue and plastic mesh so he couldn't get out the top. I put lead weights (closed in a ziplock of course) on the lid to hold it down. I have 3 small blue leg hermits in the tank at the moment. I have frozen krill, and next week I will go to the local beach and pick him up a couple fiddler crabs for his tank to hunt. I am super excited. One of the things the guys told me is when it lays eggs, if you take the eggs it will live longer. Because what it does is sits on the eggs blowing water over them protecting them and it starves itself.

I've always wanted an octopus
i picked up my tank from a kid. But you can get the tank i have for under 100 bucks. Right now petco has tanks for $1 a gallon. But you need to have it well established before adding an octopus to it. You need to do your research. There is a lot that goes into having one and they can be expensive to feed lol. I have all live bait in my tank right now. Eventually I will start utilizing toys, jars, etc to feed him.
