Hey folks,
I am new in this hobby and am happy to finally post my current tank here.

Introduction:
I have started thinking about going into the hobby since December last year and since then have been reading (German) introduction books on reefing. Only later (April) I joined Reef2Reef more activley and am very thankful for this community, since I really think the books I read were outdated.
I missed the chance to get continuos feedback on building up my tank by not posting earlier here in my tank thread, but I think better late than never at this point.
So I am prepared and wish for any kind of feedback on this system, I have not gotten any feedback yet.

Here are some pictures of my tank :) More will follow within this thread!

Equipment:
Here are some details on my tank.
- 58 gallon (220 liters) tank 39 " x 20 " x 20" ( 100 cm x 50 cm x 50 cm)
- Filter + Skimmer from Tunze Comline Reef Pack 250 (so inside the display, I do not have a sump currently)
- Lighting: 2 x EHEIM Marine Hybrid (with 52 W each) currently running 9AM - 9PM, @55% of max power, and Blue:White with 2:1 power, and moonlight (1% blue at night)
- ATO Tunze Osmolator 3152
- Streaming pumps Tunze Turbelle Nanostream 6020 and Tunze Turbelle Nanostream 6025

Current water parameters (measured using the JBL Pro Aquatest Lab Marine suitcase).
Temp. 25 C
Salinity. 33 ppt
PH 8
KdH 7-8
Ca 320
Mg 1360

The sand (Fiji white Sand M, one bag; sand bed thickness roughly 1 inch) I washed following this thread. My rocks are CaribSea LifeRock.
At the beginning I used Tunze bacteria and then Microbe-Lift Special Blend and Nite Out II to start the cycle (on 1st May).
I use Tropic Marine Pro-Reef sea salt, which I also use for waterchanges that I normally do roughly every 3-4 weeks (10-20%).
I also set up a quaratine aquarium.

My stock list from fish and coral are:
  • 2 x Mandarin dragonet
  • 2 x Banggai cardinalfish
  • 2 x Lysmata amboinensis
  • 2 x Ocellaris clownfish (currently in quarantine)
  • Montipora superman
  • Montipora digitata
  • Stylophora pistillata
  • Euphyllia paradivisa
  • Euphyllia paraancora
  • Pocillopora eydouxi
  • Alveopora
  • Caulastrea
I hope these names are correct, but let's discuss if anything is wrong :)

My most urgent challenges, besides general feedback, are:
1) I have some algea from what I think to be Cyano and had problems with diatoms.
2) We have a lot of spirorbis-worm that we cannot get rid of/are multiplying a lot, I do not think it has caused any trouble yet. But we have removed a lot of it from the back glass with a scraper.
3) I do not know if the lighting we are using is properly configured in terms of timing, power, etc.
4) I feel like the corals are growing quite slowly, but I don't know to what extent this is normal.
5) We had a situation in which one of our mandarins was a bit lethargic, just laying around and not trying to eat. Since it happened just after adding a couple of copepods we bought, we think they might just have been a bit 'bad' or old since now he is happy and looks healthy again. In the beginning, just after adding the mandarins, we were worried that they were not eating enough and that we did not have enough copepods in the system so maybe now we are just a bit afraid to underfeed them. So every now and then we buy fresh copepods and add them to the tank.
6) I once had a clam (tridacna maxima) and I absolutley loved it, however I think my shrimps murdered it. They were very curious about it after we added it and always messing with it. Later, I found a pinched hole in the clam and soon afterwards it died. The shripms are somehow problematic anyway and harass anyone, I think because they were the first ones in the tank, and every time we add something to the tank (living or not) they come immediately to check it out and sometimes mess with it. I really want to have a clam again at some point - they are so beautiful! But I am afraid of getting it killed again and would appreciate any tips on preparing the system to accomodate it and how to care for them as well.

So what do you guys think? I am happy for any feedback and will keep you posted in my build thread on any updates :)

I totally forgot the cleaning crew.
We have
2 x Red hermit crabs
2 x Clibanarius digueti
2 x Clibanarius tricolor
4 x Turbo snails

We would really like to get rid of the algee on our reef rock. I do not think our snails are the most effetive once as well :D

What do you recommend to do?
Do we need more snails/more cleaning crew?
Physical cleaning or chemicals?

Happy to get any feedback (also on my initial post :) )

Hi Gumbies R us,
thanks for the tip :) do you think an urchin would be a good idea for my tank? It is especially the algae on the stones that turned them bronwish, which does not look nice. My LFS guy said for an urchin it would be too soon in my tank...
What do you think? Also no problems with frags?

Any feedback helps :)

also: the Zoa and Xenia have recently retracted a bit. I also have the feeling that the Euphylia also pulls in a bit...

Maybe post some photos of them might be easier to give some advice on what’s going on.

I'm sorry, I'm just now responding, haha. My urchin hasn't caused any issues with our frags; it'll get on top of our toadstool but eat the algae around it. I don't think an urchin would be too soon for your tank. He is saying your tank is too new because urchins eat algae; if you don't have a lot of algae in your tank, they will die.
