Hmm. Your Hanna salinity checker also has a temp probe on it. The issue is I tend to trust a temp probe from a controller more than I trust the built-in aquarium heater or a sticker. I'd take the average of all of your measurements and build a temp offset based on that.

Good idea! I was also thinking it was more likely my heater and sticker were off. I’ll check it with my salinity tester, then figure out the offset.

I…am a SUCKER.

I went to visit the farm and, wouldn’t you know it, there were kittens…that were just weaned…and sickly. Definitely not going to make it without intervention.

:pleading-face:

So, please welcome Ollie and Spud to the family.
IMG_7661.jpeg

They have, at the very least, eye and upper respiratory infections and one is an underfed runt. I’m taking both to the vet tomorrow, but even so I’m not certain they’ll make it. Only time will tell.

Yes, I am a pushover.

In other news, the snails have gone into hiding, but tank parameters remain steady. Friday is payday and I foresee a trip to Best Fish in Milwaukee.

Hi Ollie and Spud!!! You are so luck that you both get your own fish tank to watch and harass!! Did you post an update yet if their respitory infections cleared?? How are the doing now?

They are both doing SO much better. They’re getting oral antibiotics every 12 hours, eye antibiotic ointment 4x a day, and dewormer once a day. Both are eating and drinking well and getting nice and chubby and mischievous as kittens should be. Our two dogs (corgi and mini blue heeler) have decided they are puppies. We’re keeping them separated with supervised visits.

I’ve had to switch priorities from stocking my tank to paying these little monsters’ vet bills, but they’re thriving and I’m fairly certain they wouldn’t have made it if I’d left them, especially spud the runt. You could feel all his bones and the vet said he was severely underweight. Now he’s a bit roundish and has so much more energy!

I may be getting my first fish for the tank this weekend, so a lot of exciting things happening at home!

Yay! Thanks for updating us with the good news! That makes sense that they took priority, especially given how fragile one of them was! Please continue to post updates and pictures of them when you get a chance. Do you think you will put a cat tree next to the fish tank so they can have their own "tv"?

That is a great idea, especially since the biocube has a nice, secure lid. I bet they’d enjoy watching the fish!

Not much news to report. An unexpected bill ate my fish money this paycheck, so the tank will just have to be ghost fed another 2 weeks. On the bright side, parameters are stable and the snails seem happy.

My RO/DI plumbing issues/adventures continue! I got the piece I thought was going to solve my problems, but that piece needs another piece. I am going to check out the hookup for my washing machine tomorrow to see if it looks any easier to handle.

And I’m sick.

I caught whatever my 19-year-old brought back with him from the UK, some kind of sore throat and upper respiratory crud.

Kittens are become round-bellied and very active and cute. They have decided they like people and demand pets.

What are you looking for for plumbing? An adapter for your kitchen sink? I just searched 'python water change sink adapter's and saw many other options as well.

I lucked out, I originally had freshwater tanks, so I also had python water changer. This came with a nifty adapter piece that fits a couple different sink types. This brass piece fits my current faucet. Although it leaks a little under full pressure, but I drape a towel over it and it won't spray everywhere.
It came with the green piece, and the brass adapter.

I have really weird faucets, so no adapters have worked for that. I also have weird plumbing under my sinks. So, I’m hoping to check on my washer hookup and hope that it’s more normal.

Oh My God Wow GIF by CBS

And now for a plot twist. I’ve been separated from my husband for a year and a half. We get along and I still care about him but living with him had become an unhealthy situation. He’s a hoarder and not into cleaning at all and it reached a point I just couldn’t keep up with it and his living spaces became really unhygienic. (Sorry if that’s TMI. He’s a good man, but has a lot of health issues that impact him.). We live nearby, usually grab dinner together once a week and he is involved in the kids’ lives, so it’s not a situation where I wish him any ill.

Anyhow.

Saturday he had a heart attack. He’s doing ok, but he’s still in the hospital and they’re doing a heart catheterization tomorrow. He’s already had one triple bypass and has fought off stage 3 colorectal cancer, so any issues can become big ones. I’m doing my best to be there for him, watching his dog, updating his family, and keeping track of the information from his doctors.

This also means my plans for my tank are on hold until this crisis passes.

I am still ghost feeding twice a day and doing weekly water changes and testing. Doing the maintenance is relaxing for me. I’m also now sleeping with three dogs in my bed, two lively healthy kittens in a box, and my daughter had her first day of her senior year of high school today.

Sometimes life is a three ring circus and I’m the head clown.

Picture of kitty cuteness in lieu of tank progress.

Prayers to you and husband for a full recovery, hopefully without complications. I've had my share of family with hoarder tendencies and I really know how tough those can be. Usually the nicest of people, but I can see how those issues can interfere with relationships. I'm happy for you to still be there for him as being all alone without any sort of support system can make healing difficult.

Hopefully you can get back to tank progress soon and kitty pictures will do for now.

I can relate with the feeling of being the ringmaster of a circus. Between my 4 kids (13,11,8 and 4) who I homeschool, and a husband that is completely random, never on any schedule which makes even planning dinner difficult, I feel lost and crazy on a daily basis. My tanks hold me together.

Strength and calm vibes heading your way.
Ditto on the hoarding situation. I hope in time we can live together again but I'm not betting on it. I know its cliche but everything happens for a reason and this too shall pass. It will just be that much more worth it when the time is right.

You know, it may sound weird, but I’m actually content with the way things are. I have my own space with the kids (they’re 19 and 17, so not really “kids” anymore) and it’s very comfy. I’m a lot less stressed and we get along much better because I’m not being impacted by it. Our relationship has been platonic for years after his cancer treatment, but he’s still my best friend. We’re both there for each other.

I don’t really feel the need to divorce even if we could never live together again because I’m not looking for anyone else and filing taxes jointly and sharing health insurance sure is handy.

It might be unconventional, but it’s working so far.

The kitties look great!!! …and WOW you sure have your hands full right now! I’m so glad you and your husband have remained on such good terms. As a person with a bunch of chronic health issues myself, I applaud you for setting your boundaries, while also continuing to help him and being a resource for him especially with the medical stuff which can feel impossible to manage/ navigate while drowning in the symptoms & daily minutia of ongoing health issues. Thank you for being awesome. :D

Well…no cardiac catheterization, at least not for a while. Hubby’s kidneys aren’t up for the dye. They’re going to work on getting his kidneys healthier and hopefully sending him home tomorrow with a heart monitor and then scheduling a cardiac catheterization as soon as his kidneys can handle it. Dude’s had so much chemo and radiation down there along with multiple surgeries, so I’m not surprised. He’s in good spirits and just wants out.

In tank news, I have a tiny whisp of hair algae started, but everything is happy and I can add to my CUC.

Next weekend, I’m FINALLY getting a couple of clowns and a zoa to see how they do, so I’ll probably also get something that like cleaning rocks.
