Hey everyone!
My names Alfie, cat dad of 3 a**holes. I’ve had my 90g tank set up for 6 months now but have had the privilege of gaining knowledge and experience from people on the trade and hobby.
Initial inspiration came from my bosses massive 800 gallon tank at the shop(I’m a mechanic by trade) later meeting amazing people that he knows and was able to get a grip on a lot of different methods and ways to go about the hobby.
This hobby is by no means cheap but that doesn’t mean I can’t be.
80% of this build was used and haggled down, yes I’m that guy.
Display:$100
Sump, AI Nero 5 x2, heater: $300
Skimmer:$50 (took a crap so now running a RO classic 150)
Lights: $300 2x radios gen 4 and t5s
Stand was built from wood at the home depot across the street.
Rock:$20 for way more than I needed
It’s my first tank so the last thing I wanted was to dive into a money pit and didn’t want too much of a loss.
Cycle took about 4 months. I did use ammonia and bottle bacteria. Even when the initial cycle was complete I still chose to wait it out. Went through 2 ugly phases and maybe growing through another but regular maintenance is what I’m doing and not freaking out unless it warrants a freak out.
Around month three I picked up a QT 20g that I could put in my garage and whip out when need be.
I picked up an army of inverts and qtd them for about 30days prior to throwing them in. Cleaned the qt and started taking a more aggressive qt approach for the fish. Currently I have a sailfin tang, yellow banded possum wrasse, 2 clownfish, and a coral beauty. Plan on picking up a powder blue and a fox face and stopping there with fish.
The plan is an sps dominant tank so while the tank matures and settles, make sure everyone is happy and healthy.
I’ll attach a few of the horrible photos I have since I don’t take many photos(should though)
Take care!
Cheers
