Here to document the new journey. I used to keep all kinds of saltwater tanks long ago but never had the lighting to keep more than softies. Looking forward to trying for more of a mixed reef on this one. Super excited about all the advancements in tech since I had a tank last (10 years).
55 Gallon 36" x 18" x 20" deep Acrylic
Sump system (for the first time)
(2) Redsea RL90's
I had a diatom explosion after cycling so I wanted to get some algae eaters in there. I accidentally got the nasserus snails because of the sand bed I have and wanting some sand snails but they eat meaty foods not algae. Oops. I fed them a small piece of uncooked shrimp we had in the freezer. One of them came up straight away and ate some. The other did not emerge.
After having the turbos for a day I realized how little flow I had in the tank. There was snail poo lining the outside of the sand bed. There was so much! I went out and bought a gyre, Redsea reefwave 45. Really happy with it so far.
I also decided to use the lock line return nozzle again (after initially flooding my sump, siphoning water back). I'm keeping the end up a lot higher this time. I also modified the elbow that feeds it with some holes at or above the water line to help break the siphon. Seems to work OK
I ended up getting another gyre, a cheaper one off of Amazon, Magtool brand, to try and get some back and forth flow. Built a new sump with a 20G long. I'll have to add a separate detail post about that build.
