We recently moved into a new house and I finally have room for a tank upgrade. I previously just had a 20L on the kitchen counter, but just scored a killer deal on a used 142g Planet Aquarium tank and stand. I'm excited to get going. Even though this is a big upgrade for me there are only a few fish I'm really wanting to add beyond what I have today with a yellow tang being at the top of the list. I'm planning to take my time getting up and going.
The tank is not drilled so I'll be doing that which makes me a little nervous so I'm going to just drill a single hole for the drain and then plumb the return lines over the top. I have a canopy so there's no visual downside to doing it this way compared to drilling.
I've already run into my first snag. I bought a 40 gallon PetSmart tank because it fits the inside dimensions, but trying to slide it in it won't fit. I really don't want to remove a center brace because while I guess it's possible with the tank empty I would never feel comfortable taking the brace out with the tank filled if something were to happen that forced a replacement.
I bought the 40 because everything online tells me I need at least 25% of tank volume (35.5 gallons) but at the same time Planet Aquariums sells sumps and they claim their 20 gallon version (similar dimensions is 20L) is good for tanks up to 150 gallons...leaning towards returning the 40 and buying a 20L to see if it will slide in without altering the stand.
