Hello everyone and welcome to the thread!

I'm going to be attempting to do something that I have wanted to do for a very long time, a fully fledged saltwater Paludarium. I have had my 120 gallon SPS reef running for a few years but a pipe burst in the wall behind the tank and I had to take it down. I figured this would be a great opportunity to create this Paludarium.

Concept -

This idea came to me while I was on a vacation in Hawaii. I was sitting on the beach on some lava rocks where I could see Yellow Tangs, coral, and a bunch of other fish swimming in the shallows. As I looked to my right, I could see a bunch of plant life growing out of the rock. Suddenly a beautiful Gold Dust Day Gecko came out a crevice to get some sun. I was in awe of the contrast between the lush land and the beautiful reef below me.

I want this Paludarium to have a beautiful coral reef on the bottom that slowly transitions to a tropical rainforest on top. I think this concept will be a challenging and unique setup. The goal would be to showcase all kinds of life, on both land and water. I would focus mainly on hardy soft corals and inverts on the bottom and then the setup would transition to a land portion with tropical plants and likely a couple of small geckos.

The goal is for this type of environment

Tank - 36" long by 36" tall by 18" wide. The tank will have a 7" water height for the saltwater section. My hope is that the extra height of the tank will allow enough room where salt creep is minimized. Within the tank, I will form a watertight barrier so there is no chance any saltwater can get into the land area. The land area will be quite a ways up from the saltwater section to try and minimize the salt creep which I assume is going to be the biggest challenge with this. The "transition" will be a wall that's foamed over with rock and sand to try and give it a cliff like feel to lead to the tropical land area. The land section's back wall will also incorporate a custom background with Bromeliads and other Epiphytes. I will likely incorporate the ATO into the saltwater section with some kind of small waterfall as well. The tank will also be setup with automatic misters which should hopefully aid with the salt creep as well.

Lighting - Lighting for this tank is going to be a bit of a challenge as I'm going to need to find a middle ground in the spectrums that will hopefully work . I'm still researching some options for this

More to come! 1727472853428.png

differently fallowing this one. thought about this a few times.

is that 7" with sad or with out? might water to make the water deeper IMHO with LR and sand does not leave much room for the corals to grow. with softies most grow up. unless you are talking about shrooms and zoos.

have you seen this:

Thanks! I’ll take a look at that video right now!

It’ll be about 7 inches of pure water space. Not a ton of water height but I already have quite a bit of flatter pieces of live rock. I have a good collection of Rock Flower Anemones, Ricordea, Zoas, Acans, that shouldn’t grow too high hopefully.

Right now, the plan is to incorporate a smaller tank that I already have in the back left of the setup. This smaller tank is a 14" x 8.66" x 11.02" setup.

The idea I have is to put this within the aquarium in the back left, fill it with soil/incorporate a false bottom, and then fill the larger setup with water so there's no chance of saltwater getting through to the soil/plants. I would then put a background on the back of the main tank as well as the front and right side of the smaller tank to hide that its full of substrate. I want this background to be darker and look a bit like lava rocks for a type of Hawaii rocky beach look.

Color and texture of the "cliff background" would hopefully be similar to something that looks like this:

I've always wanted to do this!!!! I'm following along for sure!!! What are you going to put in the water? Have you considered fiddler crabs?
Thanks! It’ll be quite the learning experience. I’m going to be transferring a lot of my current inhabitants from a nano I have. I have a lot of different unique and rare soft corals, rock flower anemones, feather dusters, inverts etc. For fish, I’ll likely be transferring my Red Firefish, Pink Streaked Wrasse, Royal Gramma, Tailspot Blenny, and Watchman Goby/Pistol Shrimp

I’m for sure considering fiddler crabs. It theoretically should be a good setup for them. They can even burrow in the land section if need be. I need to find a good saltwater species though that’s not just for brackish water.

Made an order today with AquaDecor for a custom background for the Paludarium. It will be custom made to look like a lava rock cliffside. Since I'll have a smaller tank within the tank, I'm having them build a background for that as well that would sit on the outside of that tank to give the whole Paludarium a cohesive feel. They will be sending me pictures in 1-2 weeks. Very excited to see how this turns out.

The “smaller” tank came in today and hopefully this will give a better visual of what the bones of the setup will be. The smaller tank will have the same background on the front and right side as the background that will be on the back glass to hopefully make it seamless. The smaller tank will then be filled with substrate and a drainage layer for the terrestrial part. Hopefully the separation can prevent a lot of the salt creep.
