smart keyboard

My iPad is not recognizing/connecting to my Apple Smart Keyboard. I’ve tried turning iPad off. Disconnecting & reconnecting keyboard. But it keeps giving me the touch screen keyboard. Argh... I type quickly & need my Smart Keyboard. Any suggestions? Do the smart keyboards just fail after...
